At approximately 7 p.m., Tucson Police officers were approached by Jesus Tapia, who made unusual statements. Later, Tapia called 911, leading to a welfare check. An officer then encountered Tapia throwing rocks in the 800 block of West Miracle Mile.
Upon officers' arrival, Jesus Tapia produced a box cutter, attempted to evade them, and began cutting himself. Taser and pepper ball deployments were attempted.
A second officer deployed a taser, enabling officers to take Tapia into custody. Officers immediately rendered aid, but Tapia was pronounced deceased prior to arrival at the hospital.
